Guwahati, the largest city of Assam, located in India, is situated between the banks of the Brahmaputra River and the foothills of the Shillong plateau. It is located at the southern banks of Brahmaputra. It is a vast metropolitan city located in eastern Assam. It is also the largest city of northeast India. Guwahati was once also referred to Pragjyotispura in ancient time. The term ‘Guwahati’ gets its name from the Assamese words ‘Guwa’ meaning areca nut and ‘Haat’ meaning Market. The city animal of Guwahati is the Gangetic river dolphin. The main languages spoken there are Assamese and English. Besides these, there are many languages spoken there including Hindi, Bengali, Nepali, Bodo and many more languages.
Routes
to Guwahati: Being a capital city, Guwahati is bound by different transport
services between India and different parts of the world. Guwahati is serviced
by the LGB (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi) International Airport, located about 12
miles from the centre of the city.
This
airport is connected by different parts of the world, including Delhi, Kolkata,
Chennai, Singapore, Thailand and many more famous destinations.
This city falls under the NFR (Northeastern
Frontier Railways)zone of the Indian Railways. The Guwahati Rail Station is located
at the Paltan Bazzaar area of the city. The Guwahati Railway Station lies under
the Barauni-Guwahati line and Guwahati-Lumding section. Some important trains
having Guwahati as a stoppage are the Garib Rath, the Rajdhani Express, the
Kamrup Express, the Vivek Express and many more.
Guwahati
also has a wide network of highways and roads. The National Highway 27 connects
Guwahati with other states of India. The bus service of the state is very well
maintained. Guwahati is serviced by the ASTC (Assam State Transport
Corporation) and other private buses running throughout the state. It is also
serviced by different cabs and taxis.
The
city also has a very good water transportation service. This city is served by
the Inland Water Transport Department which has its headquarters at the Pandu
Port at Guwahati. There are both passenger and cargo boats running across the
city. There are ferry services along the Pandu Port and the Brahmaputra river.
